A few weeks ago, I participated in my Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) – Accounting Club – annual food drive. It was a massive amount of fun. We then had a small gathering afterward at a pizza buffet nearby. It was my second time participating. Last year, 2015, we did the same thing and went to the same restaurant but unfortunately, I wasn’t very hungry that day and didn’t get to eat much.
This year, however, the event was a little different. Instead of leaving after we finish eating like last year, this year, we were required to stay until 6:30. It’s a networking event, as the faculty adviser put it and truthfully, I was feeling a little lost because I didn’t really know anyone there. So I sat by myself until someone invited me to join their table.
As soon as everyone got their food and began to dig in, the club’s faculty adviser stood up, she said, “Why don’t we go around, introduce ourselves. What year are we in the program, and one thing you’re passionate about.”
Immediately, my heart began pounding. I’m not good at introducing myself. What do I say? What am I passionate about? A large ball of jumbled answers appeared in my mind, floating like a big ball of knotted yarn. Less than 5 minutes later, as the girl next to me sat down, it was my turn. Shakily, I stood up, spoke my name, said I’ll be graduating in December, and then slowly and steadily, I said, “and I’m passionately about storytelling.” That’s the truth, I told myself. It wasn’t a lie.
As soon as I sat down, I took a deep breath. I’ve done it. The introduction moved to the next table and the guy sitting across from me asked, “What did you say you were passionate about?” Storytelling, I answered him. “So you have any cool stories?”
I blushed and chuckled, “Oh no, I write mostly flash fiction,” he seemed confused, “fiction less than 300 words,” I added.
“Cool,” he said with little interest and that was the end of the conversation. I didn’t tell him of my blog and to be frank, I felt weird telling people I spend my free time writing because no one (other than you guys) would ever understand why we like to do what we do here on WordPress. We all have a journey, no matter how strange some people might think, and mine just happens to be me working toward to being an author.
Do you have a journey that when you tell people, they won’t get it? Please share.

Hahah, this made me laugh “because no one (other than you guys) would ever understand why we like to do what we do here on WordPress” — it’s so true!!! I do a lot of photo challenges but have a hard time explaining them to “outsiders”. Well, luckily you have the rest of us here who understand! 😉

Haha, it’s indeed difficult to explain. I guess the only way for people to understand is to have them do the challenges.

Next time tell them you’re a blogger…. that really gets people… they never know what a blogger is! 😉

It’s true! I told someone once and they got all confused. 😀

I know… it’s really funny! I just tell people I’m a writer. I’m always being asked if I’m still writing and I’m surprised at the amount of random people that come up to me on occasion and tell me that they’ve been reading my posts. I started this blog as a way to journal my thoughts for myself. I never expected that anyone would even be interested in reading what I write. So… let people know that you have a blog and confidently tell them that you’re a writer. People need to hear what you have to say! 😉

Wow, that must be so cool to have people come up and tell you they’ve reading your posts, that would definitely make my day. Unfortunately, blogs aren’t exactly popular around here.

Well, it’s often people that I would rather not have reading my posts. So sometimes I guess I feel a little bit embarrassed to be honest. I am very honest in my writing after all… a little too honest at times! Lol…. I wonder what people must think! It’s hard sharing your secrets and your heart with the world, especially when you don’t know exactly who’s reading what you’ve written. Sometimes it hinders my ability to write what I really want to.

It is sometimes difficult to share so much especially when we don’t know who we know might be reading. I know because after I found out my mom’s high school friend subscribed to my blog, I became slightly embarrassed and afraid that she might share what she read with my mom and I’ve written a lot about her, so at that point, it made me conscious of what I write on here, it made me feel slightly exposed. So I understand what you mean. Knowing someone I know in real life is reading my posts at times hinders my ability to put down my thoughts in my blog.

Sometimes it’s better to stay anonymous I suppose….

Good for you for having the courage to stand up and introduce yourself and tell them what you are passionate about. If they don’t participate then it is hard for them to understand. I can just see this guy wondering, “What good is a story that is less than 300 words?!” LOL!

Well done! I too, studied accounting. I worked in the field for 10 years. I do other work now that still draws on my accounting background, which I enjoy, but I love my blog and writing. Keep going, your journey will take you to your goals.

Nice to meet a fellow accountant and nice to know there are other work out there than sitting at a desk all day. 🙂 Thank you for reading.

I think it is awesome that you stood up in front of people to say what you are passionate about. You even got a follow up question! 🙂 Maybe the more you say it, the easier it will be.

It is always exciting when I get a follow up question, too bad I stumped him with the words flash fiction.

Hello 🙂 That was an inspiring read totally loved the quote in the beginning. We should always focus on the journey we wana take cause its us who will have to experience all the ups and downs while making the journey. It should never matter what others think, they should be happy to be a part of your journey and not lead you. I am glad to get connected to you cause of the challenge.
Would definitely come back for more. Happy blogging and all the best with the remaining posts.
