This was one of the unique shops in the City of Phoenix (凤凰) in Hunan, a place I visited on the final day of my road trip. This shop specializes in silver as the Miao ethnic group has a fascination with silver.
I picked this shop because of its interesting English translation.
Okay, I know you can’t read the English Translation at the top left corner of the sign but it’s very interesting, at least to me. As a translator, I often have the pesky habit of finding inaccurate translations because that’s what I have to do when the task of quality control fell to me and this one translation had just made it to the top of my list.
If I were to translate the name of this shop, I would probably go with “The Land of the Phoenix” or “The Kingdom of Phoenix” because that’s a match to the Chinese name of the shop (凤凰天下). However, this shop has went with the English translation of “The Order of the Phoenix.” It makes little sense but for avid Harry Potter fans, you’d like this one and would probably think if this was some kind of fan club.
Me? I would’ve never had guessed it sold silver. In fact, I thought it was a museum until I asked my aunt.
