Friday Fictioneers: The Idea

PHOTO PROMPT © Kent Bonham

Caroline and Zoe have been hiking for hours beneath the mid-summer sun and at last, they reached the peak. From her backpack, Zoe pulled out a leather-bound book and placed it on a stone. “It’ll be twilight in about 90 minutes,” Zoe said, “I’ll perform the spell then.” Caroline nodded and began placing gems on the grass to form a circle.

Beneath the purple twilight, Zoe began chanting, first in Latin, then transitioned into an archaic language. Her chants became louder as the bonfire they built soared higher and as Caroline waited, she began to regret coming up with the idea.

Each week, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields-Addicted to Purple hosts Friday Fictioneers where we’re challenged to write a piece of flash fiction in 100 words, more or less, based on the picture above.

  1. Hmmm, you never know what scary occult things they could be getting themselves into. Sounds like it might be dangerous as Zoe is chanting in an archaic language. Caroline should leave right about now I think. Great job Yinglan!

  2. “…she began to regret…” Ahhh yes… I have been there many times!

(Sometime you ought to think about starting a story with a few sentences… then letting each of us try and finish it… with limits of so many words or something like that. It might be fun.)
