Finish It #18: A Second Chance

His heart was heavy. He had to find the right words to let her know. It would be a shock for her and he wasn’t sure how she would handle the news. Why? He had asked himself that question thousands of times over the last thirty minutes. Why? Somehow there had to be an answer for it. If only he could come up with one before he had to tell her.

romantic-table-setting-by-the-ocean-16477He watched as she stared at him, her eyes blinking and mouth gaped. She didn’t know what to say. Just thirty minutes before, she had walked into the restaurant, clad in her finest black mini-skirt with thin straps, and her wavy chestnut hair bound behind her in a pony tail. She was meeting someone by the username of “zdonovan9889”, who she had just a glimpse of his face on his online dating profile.

He watched as she looked around for him. He waved and she approached. As she approached him, his wave faltered as he immediately recognized her and he could tell she recognized him too. Be cool, he thought to himself and resumed waving as well as replaced his frown with his brilliant smile. Shortly after, she did too. “Kris?” He asked, leaned forward, and pecked her cheeks. He could smell her perfume, potent and strong.

“Actually it’s Kirsten but Kris is fine.” She had answered. “Sorry, have I kept you waiting long?”

“No no, I’ve just arrived shortly before you walked in. I’m Zeke, by the way.”

“Nice to meet you. So what do you do, Zeke?”

“I own a small insurance business. What about you?” Why? He asked himself then mentally. Of all the women in the vicinity, why does it have to be her?

“I’m a nurse.”

He had nodded and picked up the menu. She followed. “Have you eaten here before?” He had asked, “the pasta here is off the hook and so is its steaks and chops.” He was a big meat-eater, being his kind.

“No, this is my first time. I’m a fan of cooking at home.” After the waiter came and took their orders, she ordered the Seafood Pasta Alfredo and he a big juicy medium-rare steak, along with the menus, they both leaned forward. Fingers intertwined and rested beneath their chins, they sat there in silence as if they were studying and memorizing each other’s faces. Being what he is, his senses were much more sensitive than a regular human. He took another whiff of the perfume and immediately, he knew exactly what she was wearing. No wonder it’s so potent, he thought, it’s that Chanel N5 or whatever they call it.

A few minutes later she spoke, “You know, there’s something about you I just cannot shake.”

“What do you mean?” He asked, pretending to be puzzled. The rule was never reveal yourself unless forced to because humans would never ever understand the supernatural world. They’d just persecute you for being a freak.

“There’s just something about you that’s familiar. I just feel like we’ve met before.”

He tried to search for an answer in his head. There’s got to be something to drive her off that trail. He chuckled, “Maybe it’s fate.”

She laughed, “Do you believe that stuff?”

“You don’t?” She shook her head as the waiter laid down a large plate before each of them. The waiter asked her if she wanted cheese with pasta and she politely declined while he began to devour his medium-rare steak, first like a gentleman but as the meal went on, he became more and more animal-like. He took a deep breath after popping the large chunk of beef into his mouth. “Now, that was some good cow.”

She stared at him and he knew what she was thinking, this man is a crazy eater or he’s disgusting. Instead, she laughed, “You must had been hungry.”

He chuckled along wryly, “Yeah.” He pretended to clear his throat and changed the topic. “So what do you like to do?”

“In my free time?” He nodded, “Um, I like to bike along the trail or hike, what about you?”

“Really? You like to bike and hike? Me too!”

“No way!” She sounded surprised, “Well, let me ask you this, what are you?”

He frowned. This was the moment he dreaded. “What?”

“What are you?” She repeated and he knew at that moment she had figured out everything. “When I saw you, I knew immediately who you were and I’m sensing you did too. You’re him, the one I ran over two months ago. You had claws that night and I would certainly never forget those eyes.” She pointed at his currently emerald green eyes.

He put his hands up, he had no choice but to tell her. After all, rule number one in a relationship, don’t keep secrets. He wanted so much just to keep her in the dark but what could he say? He was dressed like some beast for a play? And he’s pretty sure she had seen him change.

So he sighed and out he spilled about how it wasn’t his choosing to be a werewolf and how he had fought with his brothers and sisters that night and was forced to leave camp and how he had vowed never to harm anyone while he was in his animal form. “I’m sorry I scared you that night. I didn’t mean to. I just don’t want you to get hurt because of my nature.” As he spoke his last words, she sat there, mouth gaped, eyes blinking but her stare didn’t leave his eyes for one second. “Uh, hello, can you please say something?”

She shook her head as if she been paused and now she’s un-paused. “I’m sorry, I’m just shock to learn about all of this. I mean it’s just so hard to believe that such things exist.”

“So I take it the date’s over and you never want to see me again?”

“Actually, no.” She chuckled. “I have a very strange motto, give everything and everyone a chance and that means everyone including you. So let’s start over.” She stuck her hand out. “Hi, I’m Kirsten but most people call me Kris.”

He smiled, “I’m Zeke.”

I am participating in Finish It, a challenge where we are provided an opening and we are to finish the story.

After I wrote the story “Into the Night” for Finish #16, some people were asking if there was a continuation. I answered with a maybe while I answered one, “By chance, they could meet again in very interesting circumstances.” This is an interesting circumstance to continue the story, right?
